So this post has been a long time coming, if you follow me on social media you already know all about my baby King Zulu and the struggle I had with him about a year ago with his sensitive stomach. If not WELCOME to this circus because believe me it was truly a circus. About a year ago I was going thru it with this dog, and I believe that was an understatement. He had developed such a sensitive tummy and what I thought at first was a chicken allergy. So here I go buying every organic dog food known to man and I’m not even going to start naming them. After 3 months of trying different foods, emergency room visits and lots of crying my vet asked me have I tried just making his food myself.
So after a few minutes of staring blankly at my vet I thought how hard can it be. She gave me some info on Just Food For Dogs and off I went to do more research. I have to admit the Virgo in me had me Googling from the car and from the first search I was sold.
So what is Just Food For Dogs? The simple answer is its a God sent!! But the official answer is it’s fresh whole food recipes that are vet supported. You have the option of choosing from pre-made food or DIY kits so you can make your pup delicious food at home.
As you can see I choose to take the DIY route and purchased myself a new Instant Pot to make things even easier. So yes I’m getting 9lbs of food made in less than 2 hours. Afterwards I get Zu’s meal container’s for the next 4 days together and we are a go. I usually never leave his food in the fridge more than 4 days so anything in excess goes in a food saver bag so it can be thawed out at a later time.
So first things first since I thought Zulu had a chicken allergy, FYI he does not have a chicken allergy the dog food was trash, I went with the Russet Potato and Beef DIY and I can’t even tell you how easy it is to make this. A huge part of this I don’t cut up the potatoes or the sweet potatoes I just cook them in the instant pot and then mash with a potato masher. Also in this recipe are green beans, peas, beef liver, carrots, apples, and ground beef. This is a ton of much needed protien and nutrients because at one point Zulu had lost fur and had horrible skin allergies as well.
Also to this I add the Just Food For Dogs Omega Plus and Safflower oil, these have really been a game changer. I follow the feeding calculator and measure out the correct portion specifically for Zu’s weight to avoid any over feeding.
It’s been a little over a year since I embarked on this journey of feeding Zu a homemade diet and I can honestly say Just Food For Dogs has been the best thing I could have ever done. Thankfully Zulu has been thriving and his coat looks better than ever. His last check up at the vet was amazing and the vet couldn’t believe it was the same sick lethargic dog that was there not too long ago.
I have also compared the pricing, because that’s always important, and honestly it’s not that much of a difference. I honestly feel like I am making out a bit cheaper due to the fact I am purchasing fresh veggies. The DIY kits are $20 as well as the Omega Oil.
At first the only place I could buy Just Food For Dogs was directly from the website but since then all the products can be found at PetsCo and Chewy.com so its super easy to find. If there was anything as a dog owner that I would recommend it would be making your dogs food. There are tons of supplements on the market now for your four legged bestie Just Food For Dogs just so happens to be the one I have tried so I just wanted to share.
